There seems to be no hard-and-fast rule out there when it comes to staying motivated at work. At some point, we will lose all the motivation that we used to have. It is as though we have been drained and sucked out dry. And we will be left with nothing to hold on to. That feeling of hollowness and emptiness then starts to creep in.
But we have to do our best to pick ourselves up and get on with our days. To do that, here are practical ways to motivate you at work.
1. Think of the chance to make an impact
This is kind of tricking your mind to think the opposite way. It is not a walk in the park but with continuous training, you will find it easy to do.
To stay motivated at work, you have to think of the chance to make an impact. It doesn’t matter how big or small the company you are working for. What matters is that someone among those multitudes is looking forward to what you can share with them.
So, don’t frustrate your chance of creating something terrific on a given day just because you don’t feel like it. Remember, someone out there is looking up to you. Don’t disappoint that person.
2. Don’t think about it as hard work
The moment you think of work as hard and seemingly insurmountable, your brain is likely to stick to that line. Whatever you conceive, it will become your reality. So, be very careful when it comes to thinking.
Again, this is another mind game. To stay motivated at work, think of it as another way for you to make progress in yourself. Consider it as one of your stepping stones to creating a much more enjoyable and promising career. After all, you’ve made a choice of doing such work.
3. Remember your why
Remembering “why” you started all of these is essential in recovering your momentum. It doesn’t matter whether it’s all about the money or the glory or the people in it. What really matters is knowing how you started or how you get here.
Getting a job is not an easy road and you have to appreciate that you got one. So, don’t blow your career up just because you seem to have lost the spark to continue.
Your work feeds you. It gives you shelter. As such, you have to take care of it.
4. Think of the feeling of “demotivation” as another phase
A wise man said, “These are all temporary. The suffering. The struggle. The wads of money on your safe. At some point, they will all disappear.”
Losing your motivation doesn’t mean you lost it all for good. No! Think of it as another phase. A temporary phase, not a permanent one. Eventually, you will regain it.
Sometimes, you just need to cut yourself some slack. Give yourself a moment or a break, so to speak, but don’t take so much time. You have mouths to feed, remember?
5. The opportunity of learning something new
Whether you are doing a menial, backbreaking, or mentally exhausting job, there will always be a nugget of wisdom or lesson to learn. To stay motivated at work, think of it as an opportunity to gain something.
Open your mind to what the day has in store for you. Don’t close up to the chance of improving your skills on a given day just because you don’t feel like working. That is your lazy bone tempting you to do nothing.
Don’t allow that to happen. Control your negative behavior of laziness before it gets the best of you.
6. Take short breaks
So, you did everything you could to stay motivated at work but to no avail. I get that, alright. My suggestion then is to give yourself moments to take short breaks. But you have to make this worthwhile.
Take short breaks and go for a walk. Get some fresh air and refresh your mind. Perhaps, you’re feeling overwhelmed and stuffy, locking yourself inside your office and being too occupied with work.
Short breaks apparently help in kicking the cloud of demotivation out of you. So, avail it.
7. Find a trigger
This is where TED Talks come into play. If you feel like after everything you’ve done, you could only feel zero ounces of motivation, TED Talks may help, or any podcast channel of your choice.
Learn from others. There are speakers persuasive enough to help you get through one of your lousiest days. Their words of encouragement are indeed music to one’s ears.

8. Read Daily about your work or what you care about
One of the reasons we feel unmotivated is that we lack the necessary information about our work. You don’t want to show up because you feel inadequate.
Thankfully, with the advancement of technology and the internet, you can peruse almost any reliable resources online. To stay motivated at work, read about your job more.
Surely, the more you know, the more motivated you become.
9. Start small whenever you don’t feel like it
If you’re not beating any deadline, starting with the most menial task at work is a great start. It could be an effective way to gain momentum. Then, you continue until you feel your energy building up.
To be motivated at work begins with a minor step. Always carry with you the principle of biting only something you can chew.
10. Sometimes, you just have to do it
Workers are not robots. We are not driven by Artificial Intelligence so we could automatically do our job regardless of what we feel. But sometimes, we have to act like one. There seems to be no other way than wake up, take a bath, drink our first cup of coffee, and kickstart with work.
If we put so much emphasis on our feelings, we are likely to lose track. If we welcome the thought of being unmotivated and we dwell on that, we are actually encouraging ourselves to feel that way even if we shouldn’t.
That’s why sometimes, we just need to do it.
11. Reach out for support
Some people are not accustomed to sharing their predicament with others, not to mention a lack of motivation. They see it as embarrassing. There is nothing absolutely wrong with reaching out to others for guidance or a little bit of wisdom.
Sometimes, you have to learn how to communicate your feelings. Unload what you’re carrying. Be honest with your feelings. Someone out there might have gone through the same and they could help you.
12. Helping and empowering others
The thought of being able to help and eventually empower others is enough to stir me to work. I get to listen to their predicaments and share my know-how as to how we could effectively resolve them.
That sense of cooperation I have with them entices me to help more and do better at work.
13. The potential of learning new skills
There are always things that you can learn from work. You just have to be open and be willing to appreciate them.
What drives me to work is the chance of amassing or acquiring new skills. Regardless of how routinary my work could be, I still believe that somewhere down the line, I’ll be learning something refreshing.
14. Healthy work culture and environment
When I’m surrounded by like-minded people, I somehow absorb how inspired and motivated they are to work. Their positive outlook on their work motivates me to do work as well.
A healthy environment where I can grow mentally and mature in my career makes me look forward to another day at work. Hence, I always make sure I’m with the people who share my vision and goals in life.

My clients are professionals and whenever we meet, they always bring something valuable to the class. On occasion, they share their stories and what they have achieved thus far.
Their stories, no matter how simple or grand, resonate with me. I can’t help myself but be motivated as well to do better and attain more.

Constructive feedback has the potential of enriching employees’ morale. It narrows expectations and they will have a clearer perspective that they are doing just fine. That they are on the right track.

What deters employees from keeping their job or staying motivated is the lack of flexible schedules. They were left with no alternatives. That could be constricting apparently.

Employees are a major asset in any company. Without them, surely, the company will wither like a leaf in the desert. As such, encouraging employees to undergo training and further, their education is a way to uplift them.
Employees’ motivation is heightened with them knowing that the company cares for their welfare. So, if they are offered the opportunity to have room for growth, chances are they can be motivated.
How do I stay motivated?
Here are some tips I use to stay motivated at work and increase my productivity and get things done without burning out.
The diligence and determination of my family is the main driving force I work. They work hard to build a life and they care about their job. They are essentially self-driven.
The possibility of contributing financially is likewise another factor that motivates me to do work. I take pride in being able to provide. You know, when you have people to care for, you will be more encouraged to keep working.
Humans are driven by success. We are always hungry for it and we fight toe and nail just to achieve it. Seeing myself thrive and grow motivates me to do work. It amazes me how capable we are of advancement and development.
Knowing that my hard work will eventually pay off, I am enthused to keep working. It also pushes me to perform the best way I could.
3. Doing things I truly care about outside work
As much as I am not into doing various things on a daily basis, I know how important it is to do an activity different from work. I study other courses or I spend some time doing outdoor activities. This way, my mind won’t be just zeroed in on work.
4. Sticking with my career goals
It’s crucial for me to stick with my career goals. I know what I want and where I should go. This knowledge of my future keeps me motivated. I have something big I’m working on.
5. I embrace my job as it is
Embracing my job at the moment and appreciating its uniqueness are the things that keep me going. I no longer think of it as a difficult one. After all, how can I reach my other goals if I don’t know how to appreciate and embrace what I currently have?
6. Always looking at the bigger picture
Looking at the bigger picture helps me stay motivated. Things at work might get mundane from time to time but I know that there are other things beyond this situation. That my lack of motivation will eventually come to pass.
